I have a friend who just got off work and pulled up to her house in the driveway. The car is full with the child, the diaper bag, the groceries, and miscellaneous items. Her first instinct is to get the child out of the car and into the house and then go back for all the other stuff to unload. So, she puts the child inside the house and returns to the car. After loading her arms with the stuff, she goes back to the door…. to find it shut and locked. Guess who is inside??? The three year old and the keys! How many us have found ourselves in this situation? Who do we call for help? How could a playroom have helped mom?
Well, a playroom is one of the preventive measures to shut and locked doors.
You know without a doubt that it is a secure place in your home. The playroom has open floor space with soft flooring made of carpet or foam pads. Be sure to add outlet covers, and tie downs straps for furniture. Toys are essential but guidelines need to followed according to the ages of the children. Shelves and bins bring organization but be aware they need to be safe as well. A baby gate or play yard gate defines the playroom. It says my child is safe here. The room needs to be visible from the rooms you use the most, such as a kitchen or even the front door or the door you unload from. Remember, safety is key.

The room needs to be age appropriate and as creative as your child’s imagination. Include a table for art and homework. For the little ones, a dress up section. Books, play kitchen, a car station, puzzles, games, etc. Just a little note: keep at least four activities for cooperative clean up.

Now mom can get back to car and unload all the stuff. She can also cook dinner, take a quick trip to the bathroom, even get the bills paid. Hey, you know what else… the toys are in one space! No more stepping on toys and it cuts down the mess in the rest of the house. Your feet will thank you later. As your child’s first teacher, you contribute to their development mentally, physically, and intellectually.
So, what happened with my friend and the locked door? She had to call a locksmith. The moral of the story… A playroom is a room with purpose.
To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven…
